Something about evangelism in every day life, is it rarely looks like evangelizing. If someone walked up to you, and immediately jumped into, “Do you know Jesus? Let me tell you about him…” you’d probably lose your attention pretty quickly, especially if you already know Jesus.
Now, if you were having a conversation with someone first, where you really felt like you were being heard, and then they started talking about Jesus, you’d probably feel more open to talk, right?
That’s what I want to talk about in this blog. The Great Commission wasn’t optional and it was directed towards all of us, but it doesn’t mean you have to quit everything you’re doing to be a full time missionary (but if God is calling you to do just that, then go do it!).
As we often say on the Race, “Ministry is life.” This means that you don’t have to set aside time for ministry. It should spill into every area of your life, and it should be as impossible for you to do things without God, as for you to do something without your brain. I understand this is hard to do, so let me clarify a few things.
The most important commandments are to love God and love others. The Great Commission was made in love, so that no one will go to the final judgment without the blood of Jesus covering them. It’s a lot easier to say, “You should let love pour into every area of your life,” than “Let ministry pour inti every area of your life,” but really, what’s the difference?
The purpose of ministry is to show God’s love to everyone! And you know what, it’s so much easier than you can imagine!
For starters, how many conversations do you get into with people? Some people are naturally more interested in striking up a conversation with a stranger, but everyone does it at some point in their lives. It sounds intimidating to talk with people for the purpose of sharing Jesus, but if you talk with them anyways, then shouldn’t your love for Jesus naturally pour into the conversation?
Focus on the solution–Jesus–rather than the problem–struggling to talk about him–and the problem just naturally goes away! It’s so easy to talk about the stuff we can’t keep out of our minds, so what if Jesus was who we couldn’t keep out of our minds? What if his love was all we could think about, and everything else was only important because of how it related to his love? It’d be a lot easier to bring it up in conversation!
Practically, this looks like dedicating time in your day to spending time with Jesus. Time is one of the greatest sacrifices we can make, but if Jesus is who we say he is, he is worth every sacrifice!
Spend time with him in a way that makes you feel closer with him. For me, that’s prayer, but worship, reading my Bible, and learning more about scripture also bring me closer to him. Of course, I think you should mix it up every once in a while to have a spiritually rounded diet, but I believe God gives you the desire for the spiritual discipline that makes you feel closest to Him in each season.
Start living your life in a way where Jesus has access to every part of it, and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the outcome! I know I have!
