This is something that happened during debrief, but I’ve been too busy to write anything on it until now.
So, I believe I’ve mentioned that we had quite a bit of free time most days, so my friend, Abeni, and I decided to visit the rec park/restaurant Hobbitenango! It was something I’d been wanting to do since the beginning of Guatemala, but I’d never found time for it.
But first, what even is Hobbitenango? Hobbitenango is a Hobbit themed place where you can spend the day. It has walking trails, archery, ax and machete throwing, mini golf, and plenty of places to eat as you enjoy the stunning view from the mountain!
Abeni and I got a little lost while trying to find the shuttle station, but we made it in time to catch the 2 o’ clock shuttle up the mountain. The trail up was so steep, we thought we were about to start rolling backwards, and then it would get even steeper!
Once we got there, we were greeted with the sight of several little Hobbit holes and the sound of music from the Lord of the Rings playing! Everything was on steep elevation (we were on the side of a mountain, after all), but that meant you could see almost everything at once!
Abeni and I wandered around until we found “the hand”, a famous spot to take pictures! There was a sign warning us not to do dangerous acrobatics while standing on it, and we joked about what we might do to push the limits.
We continued our wandering and found the archery station, which, of course, we had to stop and do. I’ve missed archery so much since being on the Race, so it was a real treat to draw a bow again! I hit 3 out of 6 bullseyes, which wasn’t too bad considering I haven’t practiced in a few months.
Then we found the restaurant. Considering it was a themed restaurant (which are always more expensive), we were surprised at the prices, and quickly agreed on getting a few things to share. It took a while for the food to come, but it was so good once it did!
We had to be back at the Hostel by 6:00, and, since we were both very particular about being on time, we agreed to leave Hobbitenango at 4:00. Unfortunately, the shuttle to go all the way down the mountain only went at 5:00, so we had a lot of time to kill at the half way point, but at least the view was cool!
Eventually, we did make it down the mountain, with plenty of time before we had to be back, so we stopped for ice cream before heading back. It had been a great day!
This sounds like a great day, full of great experiences. How fun!!!! The Hand looked really cool. The picture of you shooting the bow and arrows was my favorite! Brings back memories. (Nice shooting, by the way). Thanks for sharing about Hobbitenango.
Jealous 🙂 I haven’t done archery since college and miss it. Sounds like you’re a pretty good shot, too. Glad you had a great time!
What a fun day, Glad you are getting to steal some time to relax and explore.
Wow! Sounds like a very cool place to go!! So wonderful that you get to go off and do some exploring on your own!!
